Royal demesne

Royal demesne is land and its revenues held directly by a medieval ruler rather than granted to vassals. It supplied income, resources, and a base of royal authority.

Manorialism: A medieval system organizing agricultural production and obligations around estates controlled by lords. Royal demesne operated through estate structures also used by other medieval lords.
Carolingian Empire: A Frankish empire ruled by the Carolingian dynasty from the eighth to the tenth century. Carolingian rulers managed extensive estates that illuminate early medieval royal landholding.
Royal revenue: Income received by a monarch from land, taxes, fees, and other sources. Rents and produce from demesne estates formed one source of royal income.
Henry II of England: King of England from 1154 to 1189, whose rule strengthened royal justice and administration. His reforms expanded revenue systems that mattered as direct estate income became less sufficient.
Manor: An estate comprising land, dependent tenants, and the rights and institutions governing them. A manor could form the administrative and productive unit of demesne land.
Capitulare de villis: A late eighth- or early ninth-century Carolingian ordinance governing the management of royal estates. Its detailed instructions show how one dynasty sought to administer demesne resources.
King's household: The people and services that traveled with and supported a medieval king. Demesne produce could provision the ruler’s household and its itinerant court.
Magna Carta: The 1215 charter that limited certain royal powers and affirmed rights of the English barons and church. Its clauses addressed royal control of forests and the financial burdens of kingship.
Demesne: Land retained for the direct use of an estate’s lord, rather than assigned to tenants. Royal demesne was the ruler’s version of this broader form of lordly landholding.
Domesday Book: The 1086 survey of landholding, resources, and taxable wealth in much of England. Its entries record royal estates and their revenues after the Norman Conquest.
