Royal Road
The Royal Road was an ancient route linking Susa and Sardis, maintained by the Achaemenid state to support travel and communication across its empire.
Angarium: The Achaemenid relay system that carried royal messages between stations using fresh horses and couriers. Relay couriers made communication along the Royal Road faster than ordinary travel.
Achaemenid Empire: The Persian empire founded by Cyrus the Great, ruling much of western and central Asia from the sixth to fourth centuries BCE. Achaemenid authorities organized and maintained the route across their territories.
Achaemenid satrapy: A province of the Achaemenid Empire governed by a satrap, an official appointed by the king. Road connections helped provincial officials communicate with the imperial court.
Persian Royal Road and Silk Road: A network of overland trade routes connecting East Asia with Central Asia, the Middle East, and Europe across many centuries. Unlike the Royal Road, the Silk Road was a broad, evolving network rather than one imperial route.
Achaemenid road system: The network of routes maintained by the Achaemenid Empire to connect its territories and administrative centers. The Royal Road was one celebrated route within a much larger imperial network.
Cyrus the Great: The founder of the Achaemenid Empire, who conquered the Median, Lydian, and Babylonian kingdoms. His conquests brought Sardis and other western lands under Persian rule.
Achaemenid Empire administration: The institutions and practices through which Achaemenid kings governed a large, diverse empire. The route supported the movement of officials, orders, and information between administrative centers.
Via Appia: A major Roman road begun in 312 BCE, connecting Rome with southern Italy. It offers a later example of a state-built road serving military and administrative movement.
Caravanserai: A roadside inn where travelers and caravans could rest, obtain supplies, and shelter their animals. Roadside lodging supported civilian and commercial travel along long-distance routes.
Darius the Great: The Achaemenid king who ruled from 522 to 486 BCE and reorganized the empire's administration and infrastructure. The road's imperial use is associated with the administrative system strengthened under Darius.
