Ruan Lingyu

Ruan Lingyu (1910–1935) was a Chinese film actress whose emotionally restrained performances made her one of the leading stars of Shanghai cinema in the 1930s.

The Goddess: A 1934 Chinese silent film starring Ruan Lingyu as a mother forced into sex work to support her child. Its compassionate portrait of a marginalized mother became Ruan’s most celebrated performance.
