Rubik's Cube

A three-dimensional combination puzzle with colored faces scrambled by rotating layers. It is solved by restoring each face to a single color.

Cubie: A movable corner, edge, or center component of a twisty puzzle. The cube’s visible pieces move as cubies when its layers turn.
CFOP method: A speed-solving method organized into cross, F2L, OLL, and PLL stages. It is the most widely used framework in competitive three-by-three solving.
Ernő Rubik: A Hungarian architect and designer who invented the Rubik’s Cube. Rubik created the prototype while teaching design in Budapest.
Pocket Cube: A two-by-two twisty puzzle with eight corner pieces and no edge or center pieces. It is a smaller, simpler member of the Rubik’s Cube puzzle family.
World Cube Association: The international organization that regulates and records official speedcubing competitions. It standardized competition rules and maintains official results for cube events.
Permutation group: A mathematical group whose elements are permutations of a set. Legal turns form permutations of the cube’s movable pieces.
Roux method: A speed-solving method that builds two blocks, then solves corners and edges with few moves. Its block-building approach offers an alternative to CFOP’s layer-oriented stages.
Rubik's Cube patent: The Hungarian patent record covering Ernő Rubik’s three-dimensional puzzle. The invention was patented in Hungary in 1975.
Rubik's Revenge: A four-by-four twisty puzzle also known as the Rubik’s Revenge. Its extra inner layers create parity cases absent from the standard cube.
Twisty puzzle: A mechanical puzzle whose pieces move by twisting or rotating sections of the puzzle. The cube became the best-known example of this broader puzzle category.
