Rudder

A movable aircraft control surface that deflects airflow to produce yaw, turning the nose left or right about the vertical axis.

Yaw (aerodynamics): Rotation of an aircraft about its vertical axis, changing the direction its nose points. The rudder’s primary effect is to create yaw by producing a sideways aerodynamic force.
Flight control surfaces: Movable or adjustable aircraft surfaces that change aerodynamic forces and moments to control flight. The rudder is one member of this broader family of aerodynamic controls.
Crosswind landing: An aircraft landing in wind blowing across the runway rather than along it. Rudder helps align the aircraft’s nose with the runway during touchdown.

Vertical stabilizer: The fixed vertical tail surface that provides directional stability in an aircraft. The rudder is hinged to this surface, which supplies its aerodynamic base.
Aerodynamic force: A force exerted by air on a body moving through it or exposed to airflow. Rudder movement controls the aircraft by changing the aerodynamic forces on its tail.
Crosswind takeoff: An aircraft takeoff with wind blowing across the runway. Rudder counters wind-driven yaw and helps maintain runway direction during the ground roll.
Elevator (aeronautics): A hinged tail control surface that primarily changes an aircraft’s pitch. The elevator controls pitch, the motion about the lateral axis rather than yaw.
Rudder limiter: A system that restricts rudder deflection, often according to aircraft speed or operating conditions. Limiting deflection helps prevent excessive loads and dangerous yaw at high speed.
