Rudolf Carnap

Rudolf Carnap (1891–1970) was a German-born philosopher of science and leading logical positivist. He developed influential accounts of logical syntax, meaning, probability, and the structure of scientific theories.

Logical positivism: A philosophical movement that used logic and science to clarify knowledge and reject metaphysical claims as cognitively meaningless. Carnap became one of its leading members and helped shape its program.
Logical syntax: The formal study of the rules and transformations of a language, considered apart from its interpretation. Carnap used syntactic rules to replace disputes about metaphysical truths with questions about linguistic frameworks.
Moritz Schlick: An Austrian philosopher of science who founded and led the Vienna Circle until his death in 1936. Schlick’s circle gave Carnap a central setting for developing logical empiricism.
Theoretical terms: Terms in scientific theories that describe entities or properties not directly observable, such as electrons or genes. Carnap’s analyses helped explain how such terms connect to observation and scientific laws.
Analytic philosophy: A tradition that uses logical analysis and attention to language to clarify philosophical problems. Carnap’s work exemplifies the tradition’s effort to make philosophy precise through analysis.
Semantic theory of truth: An account of truth in which a language’s sentences are evaluated through a metalanguage that specifies their interpretation. Carnap’s semantic work helped establish formal tools for discussing truth and meaning.
Otto Neurath: An Austrian philosopher and sociologist who advocated physicalism and a unified science. Neurath’s social and physicalist vision challenged and influenced Carnap’s account of scientific language.
Analytic–synthetic distinction: The distinction between truths grounded in meanings or rules and truths dependent on how the world is. Carnap’s framework treated analytic truths as internal to linguistic systems, a view Quine later challenged.
Vienna Circle: A group of philosophers and scientists in 1920s and 1930s Vienna who promoted scientific philosophy and logical analysis. Carnap joined its central discussions and helped formulate its shared philosophical program.
Principle of tolerance: Carnap’s proposal that no single logical language is uniquely correct; systems should be judged by their purposes. It expresses his view that philosophical disputes over frameworks can be settled by practical choice.
