Rudolf Clausius

Rudolf Clausius (1822–1888) was a German physicist and mathematician who helped establish thermodynamics. He formulated the second law and introduced entropy as a measure of irreversible energy dispersal.

Second law of thermodynamics: A thermodynamic law stating that the entropy of an isolated system never decreases. Clausius gave this law its influential formulation: heat does not spontaneously flow from cold to hot.
Clausius theorem: A thermodynamic result stating that the cyclic integral of heat transfer divided by temperature is nonpositive. It expresses the second law mathematically and underpins the entropy state function.
Sadi Carnot: A French engineer whose analysis of ideal heat engines anticipated the second law of thermodynamics. Carnot's engine reasoning became a foundation Clausius recast using energy and entropy.
Ludwig Boltzmann: An Austrian physicist who developed statistical mechanics and connected entropy with microscopic probability. Boltzmann gave a molecular interpretation to the entropy Clausius had introduced macroscopically.
Entropy: A state function that quantifies energy dispersal and the number of microscopic arrangements compatible with a system's state. Clausius introduced the term and defined its change through reversible heat transfer.
First law of thermodynamics: The conservation law stating that a system's energy change equals heat supplied minus work done by the system. Clausius's work combined energy conservation with a separate constraint on which processes can occur.
James Prescott Joule: An English physicist who established the equivalence of mechanical work and heat through experiments. Joule's results supported the energy conservation that Clausius incorporated into thermodynamics.
Hermann von Helmholtz: A German physicist and physician who helped establish the conservation of energy as a general physical principle. Helmholtz's energy framework formed part of the intellectual setting for Clausius's thermodynamics.
Arrow of time: The apparent direction in which physical processes unfold, associated with increasing entropy. Clausius's second law supplied a thermodynamic account of why macroscopic processes have a preferred direction.
Reversible process: An idealized process that can be reversed through infinitesimal changes without leaving a net change in system and surroundings. Clausius defined entropy changes using heat transferred along reversible paths.
