Rugby league

Rugby league is a code of rugby football played by two teams of thirteen. Teams advance the ball through running, passing, and kicking, with tackles followed by a play-the-ball.

Play-the-ball: The restart in rugby league in which a tackled player regains their feet and rolls the ball backward with the foot. It restarts play after most tackles and lets the attacking team continue its six-play possession.
Rugby Football Union: The governing body of rugby union in England, founded in 1871. Its amateur rules and refusal to compensate players helped provoke the split that produced league.
National Rugby League: Australia's leading professional rugby league competition, featuring clubs from Australia and New Zealand. It is the code's most prominent club competition and shapes the modern professional game.
Rugby sevens: A rugby union variant played by seven players per team in short matches. It shares league's reduced-team format but follows union laws.
Six-tackle rule: The rugby league rule limiting a team's possession to six tackles before the ball is handed over. It sets the core limit on each attacking team's attempt to advance and score.
Northern Rugby Football Union: The organization formed in 1895 by northern English clubs that broke from the Rugby Football Union; it later became the Rugby Football League. It organized the breakaway clubs that established rugby league as a separate code.
Super League: The leading professional rugby league competition in England, founded in 1996. It is the principal club competition in the sport's English heartland.
American football: A gridiron sport in which teams advance an oval ball through a sequence of downs and may pass it forward. Its downs and permitted forward pass contrast with league's tackle count and passing rules.
Forward pass: An illegal pass in rugby codes in which the ball travels toward the opponents' dead-ball line relative to the passer. Its prohibition shapes how league teams move the ball laterally or backward.
Rugby league in Australia: The development and organized competition of rugby league in Australia, where the sport became a major football code. Australian clubs formed a league in 1908, making the country a central home of the code.
