Ruhr occupation

The Ruhr occupation was France and Belgium’s 1923 seizure of Germany’s industrial Ruhr region to enforce reparations. German passive resistance and economic disruption turned the crisis into a major test of the postwar settlement.

Treaty of Versailles: The 1919 peace treaty that formally ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied powers. Its reparations provisions supplied France and Belgium’s stated basis for occupying the Ruhr.
Reparations Commission: The Allied body established after World War I to determine and administer Germany’s reparations obligations. Its findings on German deliveries helped France and Belgium justify intervention.
