Rural depopulation

Rural depopulation is a sustained decline in the population of rural areas, often driven by migration to towns and cities and accompanied by population ageing.

Rural-urban migration: The movement of people from rural areas to towns and cities, whether temporarily or permanently. It is a direct source of rural population loss, especially when young adults leave.
Rural ageing: The growing concentration of older people in rural populations relative to younger age groups. It is a common demographic consequence of young people leaving rural areas.
Empty Spain: A name for sparsely populated Spanish interior regions marked by long-term population loss and ageing. It is a prominent European case linking rural outmigration with settlement decline.
Urbanization: The increasing share of a population living in urban areas, often through migration and urban growth. Urbanization can accompany rural depopulation, but measures the growth of urban residence rather than rural loss.
Demographic transition: The long-term shift from high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates as societies develop. Falling birth rates can deepen population decline when migration has already reduced the number of potential parents.
School consolidation: The merger or closure of schools to combine pupils and resources across a wider area. Falling numbers of school-age children can make local schools difficult to sustain.
