Rurikids

The Rurikids were a dynasty traditionally traced to Rurik that ruled Kievan Rus and, after its fragmentation, numerous principalities and states across eastern Europe.

Rurik: A ninth-century ruler whom the Primary Chronicle identifies as the founder of the Rus princely dynasty. The dynasty takes its traditional name and origin from this ruler.
Rota system: A system of princely succession in which rulers moved among territories according to seniority within a dynasty. It helps explain how Rurikid princes claimed and exchanged seats of rule.
Olga of Kyiv: A tenth-century regent of Kyiv who governed after the death of her husband, Prince Igor. Her regency preserved Rurikid rule and strengthened Kyiv’s authority.
Principality of Moscow: A northeastern Rus principality that grew into the dominant center of power around Moscow. Its rulers descended from a Rurikid branch and consolidated many former Rus lands.
Primary Chronicle: A medieval East Slavic chronicle compiled in Kyiv in the early twelfth century. Its account supplies the best-known story of Rurik’s invitation and accession.
Appanage: A territory or revenue assigned to a member of a ruling family, often under a larger monarchy. Rurikid princes governed territories that increasingly became hereditary family possessions.
Sviatoslav I of Kyiv: A tenth-century prince of Kyiv known for military campaigns against neighboring powers. His campaigns expanded the reach of the early Rurikid state.
Tsardom of Russia: The Russian state ruled by tsars from Ivan IV’s coronation in 1547 until Peter the Great’s imperial reforms. The Moscow Rurikids ruled this state before the dynasty’s male line ended.
Varangians: Scandinavian traders and warriors active in eastern Europe and the Byzantine world during the Viking Age. The dynasty’s origin story places Rurik among Scandinavian newcomers called Varangians.
Congress of Liubech: A council of Rus princes held in 1097 to address succession conflicts and territorial claims. Its settlement recognized dynastic claims to ancestral lands without ending princely rivalry.
