Russian Arctic exploration

Russian Arctic exploration is the charting and study of Russia’s Arctic coastline, islands, and seas by Russian and Soviet expeditions. It spans voyages of discovery, scientific surveys, and efforts to establish routes and settlements.

Great Northern Expedition: An eighteenth-century Russian expedition that surveyed Siberia’s Arctic coast and explored the North Pacific. Its separate detachments charted much of the Siberian coastline between 1733 and 1743.
Northern Sea Route: A shipping route through Arctic waters along Russia’s northern coast, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific. Surveying its passages was a central practical aim of Russian Arctic voyages.
Vitus Bering: A Danish-born Russian naval officer who led expeditions exploring Siberia and the North Pacific in the eighteenth century. He commanded the Great Northern Expedition, whose detachments surveyed Russia’s eastern Arctic.
Arctic cartography: The making of maps of Arctic lands, coastlines, islands, and waters. Expeditions progressively replaced uncertain outlines with surveyed coastlines and navigable charts.
Northwest Passage: A sea route through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It is the western counterpart to the Northeast Passage explored along Russia’s coast.
Vega Expedition: The 1878–1880 voyage led by Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld that completed the first navigation of the Northeast Passage. The voyage demonstrated that the Arctic route along Russia could be traversed by ship.
Icebreaker: A ship designed to move through ice-covered waters by breaking ice with its hull. Icebreakers made repeated surveys and navigation possible where ordinary ships could not pass.
Semyon Chelyuskin: A Russian polar explorer who reached the northernmost point of mainland Eurasia during the Great Northern Expedition. His coastal survey gave a lasting name to the continent’s northern extremity.
Soviet Arctic: The Arctic territories and waters administered and developed by the Soviet Union. Soviet exploration became part of a wider program of settlement, science, and strategic development.
Roald Amundsen: A Norwegian polar explorer who led the first successful navigation of the Northwest Passage in 1903–1906. His expedition offers a comparison with the different geography and logistics of Russian Arctic voyages.
