Russian Far East

The easternmost region of Russia, extending across northeastern Asia from the Arctic coast to the Pacific and the borders of China and North Korea. It includes vast inland territories as well as island chains and coastal areas.

Siberia: A vast region of northern Asia, much of it within Russia, extending from the Ural Mountains to the Pacific watershed. The Russian Far East is commonly distinguished from Siberia, though definitions and boundaries vary.
Russian conquest of Siberia: The eastward expansion of Russian power across Siberia from the late sixteenth century onward. This expansion laid the groundwork for Russian rule in territories later grouped as the Far East.
Northern Sea Route: A shipping route along Russia's Arctic coast connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It links the region's Arctic coast to maritime routes across northern Eurasia.
Nivkh people: An Indigenous people of the lower Amur River region and Sakhalin Island. Nivkh communities have deep ties to the region's river and island environments.
Russian North: A cultural and geographic region of northern European Russia, not a single administrative unit. Despite its Arctic reach, the Russian Far East is not the Russian North.
Russian Far East Federal District: A Russian federal district covering the country's easternmost administrative regions. This administrative unit provides one official boundary for the broader region.
Treaty of Nerchinsk: A 1689 treaty between the Russian and Qing empires that established their first formal boundary in the Amur region. It temporarily checked Russian expansion toward the Pacific and framed later border disputes.
Port of Vladivostok: A major Russian commercial port on the Sea of Japan and a gateway to Pacific trade. It serves as a principal maritime outlet for the southern Far East.
Evenki people: An Indigenous Tungusic people whose communities span Siberia and parts of northeastern Asia. Evenki communities inhabit inland parts of the Russian Far East and neighboring regions.
Russian Arctic: The Arctic territories and waters under Russian jurisdiction, spanning several regions and seas. Its Arctic areas overlap with the Far East, but the two labels describe different regional frameworks.
