Russian intelligentsia

The Russian intelligentsia was a socially influential group of educated people who debated culture, politics, and reform, often defining themselves through critical distance from state power.

Pyotr Chaadayev: A Russian philosopher whose 1836 critique of Russia’s historical isolation provoked official condemnation. His first Philosophical Letter made national identity and Russia’s place in Europe central intellectual disputes.
Alexander Herzen: A Russian writer and political thinker who advocated socialism and published the émigré journal The Bell. His journalism connected intellectual dissent with political reform and revolutionary hopes.
Obshchina: A traditional Russian village community that allocated land collectively and shared certain local responsibilities. Intellectuals debated whether its communal landholding could support a distinct path to socialism.
