Russian national identity

Russian national identity is a shared sense of belonging shaped by Russian history, language, culture, political institutions, and territory. Its meanings have changed across imperial, Soviet, and post-Soviet eras.

Kievan Rus’: A medieval East Slavic polity centered on Kyiv that influenced the histories of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. Its contested inheritance anchors rival accounts of the Russian nation’s historical beginnings.
