Russian Revolution of 1905

A wave of strikes, protests, peasant uprisings, and military mutinies in the Russian Empire that forced Tsar Nicholas II to grant limited political concessions.

Bloody Sunday: A January 1905 massacre in which imperial troops fired on peaceful demonstrators marching toward the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. The killings helped ignite the nationwide strikes and protests that defined the revolution.
Russo-Japanese War: A war fought between Russia and Japan from 1904 to 1905, ending in Russia’s defeat. Military failures weakened the regime and intensified public criticism before the revolution.
Nicholas II: The last emperor of Russia, whose reign lasted from 1894 until his abdication in 1917. His concessions and resistance to representative government defined the monarchy’s response.
