Russian revolutionary movement

A diverse set of political movements that sought to overthrow autocracy and transform Russian society in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Russian Empire: A multiethnic monarchy ruled by the Romanov dynasty from 1721 to 1917. Imperial autocracy and social inequality shaped the conditions revolutionaries sought to change.
Narodnaya Volya: A Russian revolutionary organization that assassinated Alexander II in 1881. Its campaign of targeted violence became a defining, contested tactic.
Decembrist revolt: An 1825 uprising by Russian army officers who opposed the succession of Nicholas I and sought political reform. It provided an early example of organized opposition within the imperial elite.
Bolshevik–Menshevik split: The 1903 division of Russian Social Democrats into Bolshevik and Menshevik factions over party organization and strategy. The split made disagreements over leadership and revolution visible within Marxism.
October Manifesto: Nicholas II’s 1905 promise of civil liberties and an elected legislative assembly, the State Duma. It marked a concession extracted by revolutionary pressure, though autocratic power persisted.
Serfdom in Russia: A system that bound many Russian peasants to landlords until its abolition in 1861. Its legacy of land hunger and rural inequality fueled revolutionary arguments.
Zemlya i Volya: A Russian revolutionary organization that promoted peasant agitation in the 1870s. Its split exposed conflict between rural propaganda and political terror.
Emancipation reform of 1861: The legislation that abolished serfdom in Russia in 1861 while imposing conditions on former serfs. Its limited land settlement sharpened grievances that revolutionary groups later mobilized.
Anarchism in Russia: A Russian political tradition opposing hierarchical authority and advocating its abolition. Anarchists rejected the centralized party-state envisioned by many Marxists.
State Duma: The elected legislative assembly introduced in the Russian Empire after the 1905 Revolution. Its restricted powers exposed the limits of the regime’s response to demands for representation.
