Russo-Crimean Wars

The Russo-Crimean Wars were a series of conflicts between the Tsardom of Russia and the Crimean Khanate, culminating in campaigns against Moscow in 1571 and 1572.

Battle of Molodi: A 1572 battle in which Russian forces defeated a Crimean Tatar invasion near Moscow. Its Russian victory ended the immediate danger posed by the khanate’s 1571 campaign.
Crimean Khanate: A Turkic state centered on Crimea, ruled by the Giray dynasty from the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries. It was Russia’s principal adversary in the conflicts.
Crimean slave raids: Raids from the Crimean Khanate that captured people across the northern Black Sea region for enslavement. The wars were driven partly by the recurring human and economic damage of these incursions.
Battle of Sudbishchi: A 1555 battle in which Russian forces fought a Crimean Tatar army near Sudbishchi. It illustrates an earlier Russian encounter with Crimean forces before the attacks on Moscow.

Golden Horde: A Mongol successor state that ruled much of the Eurasian steppe from the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries. The Crimean Khanate emerged from the political fragmentation that followed its decline.
Oprichnina: A system of separate territory and political repression established by Ivan IV in Russia from 1565 to 1572. The 1571 disaster exposed weaknesses in a state already strained by internal upheaval.
Battle of Orsha: A 1514 battle in which Lithuania defeated a larger Muscovite army during the Muscovite–Lithuanian Wars. It offers a contrasting example of Muscovy’s military challenges on its western frontier.
Oka River: A major river in western Russia that formed a defensive frontier south of Moscow. Russian forces used its crossings and banks to impede Crimean advances toward the capital.
Muscovy: A medieval and early modern Russian state centered on Moscow, predecessor of the Tsardom of Russia. Its expansion southward brought it into recurring conflict with the Crimean Khanate.
