Rutile

Rutile is a tetragonal crystalline mineral and one of the principal polymorphs of titanium dioxide. Its structure gives it high refractive indices and strong birefringence.

Titanium dioxide: Titanium dioxide is an inorganic compound with the formula TiO₂, occurring naturally in several mineral forms. Rutile is one of its principal naturally occurring crystalline forms.
TiO₆ octahedron: A TiO₆ octahedron is a titanium ion surrounded by six oxygen ions at the corners of an octahedron. Connected octahedra form the structural framework of rutile.
Titanium dioxide pigment: Titanium dioxide pigment is finely divided TiO₂ used to make materials white and opaque. Rutile is the principal crystalline form used in many durable commercial pigments.
