Rwanda

Rwanda is a landlocked country in the African Great Lakes region and a member of the East African Community. Its capital and largest city is Kigali.

Kingdom of Rwanda: A precolonial kingdom that expanded across much of present-day Rwanda and continued under colonial rule. Its institutions and monarchy predated the republic and shaped Rwanda’s political history.
Paul Kagame: A Rwandan politician and former military leader who has served as president since 2000. His government has led Rwanda’s post-genocide reconstruction and centralization of political power.
Genocide against the Tutsi: The 1994 mass murder in Rwanda, in which extremist forces killed Tutsi and moderate Hutu over about 100 days. It is the defining catastrophe in Rwanda’s recent history.
Kigali: The capital and largest city of Rwanda, located near the country’s geographic center. Kigali concentrates national government, commerce, and much of Rwanda’s urban growth.
East African Community: A regional intergovernmental organization promoting economic and political cooperation among East African states. Rwanda’s membership places it within a regional project for integration.
German East Africa: A German colony in East Africa from 1885 until the First World War, including present-day Rwanda and Burundi. German colonial rule introduced Rwanda’s first European administration.
Juvénal Habyarimana: A Rwandan military officer and politician who served as president from 1973 until his death in 1994. His government preceded the genocide and the end of the First Republic.
Rwandan Civil War: An armed conflict from 1990 to 1994 between the Rwandan government and the Rwandan Patriotic Front. The war formed the immediate political and military context for the genocide.
Economy of Rwanda: A developing economy based on services, agriculture, industry, and tourism. Its sectors show how Rwanda earns livelihoods and seeks economic growth.
African Great Lakes: A region centered on the Great Lakes of East Africa and the countries surrounding them. Rwanda’s geography and regional identity are closely tied to this lake-centered region.
