Saber-toothed cat

Saber-toothed cats were extinct felids distinguished by greatly enlarged upper canine teeth. They included multiple lineages that evolved this feature independently.

Smilodon: An extinct genus of saber-toothed cats from the Americas, including the species Smilodon fatalis. Its robust build and long canines make it the best-known example of the group.
Felid bite mechanics: The anatomy and forces involved when cats close their jaws and deliver a bite. Saber-toothed cats had to use jaw and neck mechanics suited to fragile, elongated canines.
Machaeroides: An extinct early eutherian mammal with enlarged canine teeth, known from Eocene deposits in North America. It represents an early, non-felid saber-toothed form predating true cats.
