Sacagawea

Sacagawea was a Shoshone woman who accompanied the Lewis and Clark Expedition from 1804 to 1806, interpreting and helping the party travel through the northern Rocky Mountains.

Toussaint Charbonneau: A French Canadian fur trader and interpreter who joined the Lewis and Clark Expedition with Sacagawea. Her husband, he was hired as an interpreter and brought her into the expedition.
Shoshone language: The Numic language spoken by Shoshone communities across the western United States. Sacagawea spoke it and interpreted during the expedition’s negotiations with Shoshone people.
Fort Mandan: A winter encampment built by the Lewis and Clark Expedition near present-day Washburn, North Dakota. Sacagawea joined the expedition there in late 1804.
Sacagawea dollar: A United States dollar coin introduced in 2000, featuring Sacagawea carrying her son Jean Baptiste. The coin made her image widely recognizable in modern American currency.

Sacagawea River: A river in Montana named in honor of Sacagawea. Its name commemorates her association with the expedition’s route through the region.
William Clark: An American explorer and army officer who co-led the expedition with Meriwether Lewis. His journals describe her family and her role during the expedition.
Interpreting: The oral transfer of meaning between speakers of different languages. The expedition’s multilingual chain relied on her interpreting between Shoshone and Hidatsa.
