Sacramental theology

Sacramental theology examines how Christian sacraments signify, embody, or convey divine grace. Christian traditions differ over their number, meaning, and efficacy.

Sacramental sign: A visible or material sign understood to signify and communicate sacred reality. Sacramental theology asks how outward signs relate to the grace they signify.
Seven sacraments: The seven rites recognized as sacraments in Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions. This count contrasts with Protestant traditions that recognize fewer sacraments.
New Testament: The collection of early Christian writings that forms the second part of the Christian Bible. Its accounts of baptism and the Lord's Supper anchor later sacramental interpretation.
Thomas Aquinas: A thirteenth-century Dominican theologian whose synthesis became central to Catholic theology. He gave a systematic account of sacramental signs, causes, and effects.
Baptism: A Christian rite involving water that marks initiation into the faith and community. Theories of grace shape whether baptism is understood as regeneration, covenant sign, or public confession.
