Sacred kingship

Sacred kingship is a political tradition in which a ruler’s authority is linked to divine power, religious status, or ritual duties. Its forms range from divine rulership to human kings who mediate between gods and communities.

Divine right of kings: A doctrine that a monarch's authority comes directly from God and is not subject to earthly approval. It states explicitly the divine source of authority that sacred kingship can imply.
Pharaoh: The title of ancient Egyptian monarchs, who held political office and were represented as divine or divinely connected rulers. Egyptian kingship made divine status a central feature of royal ideology.
James VI and I: The Stuart monarch who ruled Scotland as James VI and England and Ireland as James I. His writings defended a divinely grounded monarchy in early modern Britain.
Theocracy: A system of government in which religious authorities rule or religious law directly governs political life. Sacred kingship can sacralize a monarch without placing clergy in direct control.

Sumerian kingship: The institution of rule in ancient Sumer, where kingship was understood as a divine institution entrusted to human rulers. Sumerian traditions cast kingship as divine in origin without making every king a god.
