Safavid Iran

The Iranian state ruled by the Safavid dynasty from 1501 to 1736. Its rulers made Twelver Shiism the state religion, shaping Iran’s religious and political identity.

Safavid dynasty: The dynasty that ruled Iran from 1501 to 1736, founded by Shah Ismail I. Its rulers built and governed the state named Safavid Iran.

Mughal Empire: A Muslim-ruled empire that governed much of the Indian subcontinent from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries. It shared Persianate court culture with Safavid Iran but developed a distinct imperial order.
Shah Ismail I: The founder of Safavid rule in Iran, crowned shah in 1501. His conquest of Tabriz established the dynasty’s Iranian state.
Safavid army: The military forces maintained by Safavid rulers, including Qizilbash cavalry and later ghulam troops. Its changing composition helped shahs counter powerful tribal commanders.
