Sahelian kingdoms

Sahelian kingdoms were precolonial states along the southern Sahara that controlled trade, cultivated regional power, and included Ghana, Mali, Songhai, and Kanem-Bornu.

Ghana Empire: A medieval West African state that controlled parts of the western Sahel and prospered from trans-Saharan trade. An early western Sahelian power whose rise preceded Mali.
Trans-Saharan trade routes: Caravan corridors that crossed the Sahara between North African markets and Sahelian centers. Control of caravan corridors connected rulers to valuable goods and revenues.
