Sahih Muslim

A major Sunni hadith collection compiled by Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj in the ninth century. It is widely regarded as one of the most authoritative collections of prophetic reports in Sunni Islam.

Hadith: A report about the Prophet Muhammad’s words, actions, approvals, or personal characteristics. Sahih Muslim is a collection of hadith reports.

Hadith authentication: The process of judging whether a hadith report can be reliably attributed to its source. Muslim selected reports he judged sound according to hadith-critical standards.
Nishapur: A historic city in northeastern Iran that became a major center of Islamic learning. Muslim lived and worked in Nishapur’s influential scholarly environment.
Sunni Islam: The largest branch of Islam, grounded in the Qur’an and the prophetic Sunnah as understood through Sunni scholarship. The collection holds canonical status within Sunni religious scholarship.
Jami al-Tirmidhi: A Sunni hadith collection compiled by al-Tirmidhi that discusses report grades and scholarly views. Its explicit grading and commentary differ from Muslim’s more focused compilation.
