Sai

A traditional Okinawan metal weapon with a pointed central prong and two curved side prongs, commonly used in pairs in martial arts.

Tsuka: The handle of a Japanese weapon, usually gripped during use. The sai’s central handle is gripped between its prongs.
Ryukyu Kingdom: A historical kingdom centered on Okinawa that flourished from the fifteenth century until its annexation by Japan in 1879. The sai is associated with the martial culture of this island kingdom.
Matayoshi Kobudō: An Okinawan weapons tradition associated with the Matayoshi family and its martial arts lineage. Sai is among the weapons taught in this kobudō system.
Tonfa: An Okinawan weapon consisting of a baton with a perpendicular side handle. Unlike the sai’s central point and paired prongs, the tonfa is built around a side grip.
Yoku: The curved side prongs of a sai, extending outward from its central handle. They can catch or deflect an opponent’s weapon and protect the hand.
Okinawa: A Japanese prefecture comprising islands in the Ryukyu chain between Kyushu and Taiwan. Okinawan traditions are central to the sai’s historical identity.
Shōrin-ryū: An Okinawan karate style descended from Shuri-te traditions. Some Shōrin-ryū lineages include sai kata in their weapons training.
Nunchaku: A weapon made of two short sticks joined by a cord or chain. Its flexible linked sections contrast with the sai’s rigid metal structure.
Saki: The pointed tip at the end of a sai’s central prong. This tip supplies the sai’s principal thrusting point.
Kobudō: A Japanese term for traditional martial arts, especially Okinawan systems emphasizing weapons. Sai practice is one prominent part of Okinawan kobudō.
