Said bin Sultan

Said bin Sultan was Sultan of Muscat and Oman from 1804 to 1856. He expanded Omani power along the East African coast and made Zanzibar a political and commercial center.

Zanzibar: An East African island and archipelago that became the seat of Said bin Sultan’s government and a major commercial center. Said transferred his court to Zanzibar, making the island the center of his far-reaching sultanate.
Omani Navy: The naval forces maintained by Omani rulers to defend and project power across the Indian Ocean. Naval strength helped Said secure coastal possessions and maintain links between Muscat and East Africa.
Al Bu Said dynasty: The ruling dynasty of Oman founded by Ahmad bin Said in the eighteenth century. Said inherited the throne as a member of the dynasty that had unified Oman.
Majid bin Said: The first Sultan of Zanzibar, who ruled from 1856 until 1870. Said’s son inherited Zanzibar after the dispute over succession following his father’s death.

Clove: An aromatic flower bud used as a spice, cultivated extensively on Zanzibar under Omani rule. Clove cultivation expanded under Said’s rule and became a major source of Zanzibar’s export wealth.
Ahmad bin Said al-Busaidi: The founder of the Al Bu Said dynasty and ruler of Oman from 1749 until 1783. His dynasty established the political lineage from which Said bin Sultan descended.
Thuwaini bin Said: Said bin Sultan’s son who became Sultan of Muscat and Oman after his father’s death. His succession to Muscat and Oman formalized the division of Said’s dominions.
Zanzibar Sultanate: A sultanate established on Zanzibar after the division of Said bin Sultan’s dominions between his sons. His death led to the separation of Zanzibar from the Omani domains ruled from Muscat.
Indian Ocean slave trade: The movement and sale of enslaved people through Indian Ocean networks, including routes linking East Africa and Arabia. Enslaved labor supported plantation agriculture and commerce during the expansion of Omani power in East Africa.
