Saigō Takamori

Saigō Takamori was a Japanese samurai and statesman who helped overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate and later led the 1877 Satsuma Rebellion against the Meiji government.

Satsuma Domain: A powerful domain in southwestern Japan ruled by the Shimazu family until the abolition of domains in 1871. Saigō’s home domain supplied the political base and forces behind his early influence.
Satchō Alliance: A late-Tokugawa alliance between the Satsuma and Chōshū domains against the shogunate. Saigō helped negotiate the partnership that united two major opponents of Tokugawa rule.
