Sailboat

A boat propelled chiefly by sails that capture wind, often with an auxiliary engine for maneuvering or travel in calm conditions.

Sailing: The activity of propelling and steering a vessel with sails. Sailboats move by converting wind into motion through the techniques of sailing.
Hull (watercraft): The watertight body of a vessel that provides buoyancy and supports its structure. The hull carries the crew and equipment while displacing water.
Dinghy sailing: Sailing in small, usually open boats that are light enough to be carried or launched from shore. Small sailboats offer responsive handling and are common for training and racing.
Motorboat: A boat propelled primarily by an engine rather than sails. Its propulsion depends on engine power instead of wind captured by sails.
Sail: A shaped sheet of fabric or other material that captures wind to propel a vessel. The sail receives aerodynamic force that drives the boat.
Rigging: The ropes, wires, and fittings that support and control a vessel’s sails and spars. Rigging holds the sail plan in place and lets sailors adjust it.
Cruising sailboat: A sailboat designed primarily for comfortable travel and living aboard rather than maximum racing speed. Cruising sailboats use sail power for extended journeys and onboard life.
Catamaran: A vessel with two parallel hulls joined by a supporting structure. Sailboats may use one hull or two, with different stability and handling trade-offs.
Keel: A structural member running along the bottom of a boat, often providing stability and resistance to sideways motion. Its underwater resistance counters the sideways force generated by the sails.
Mast (sailing): A vertical spar that supports sails and their rigging on a sailing vessel. The mast carries the sails above the hull where they can catch wind.
