Saint Anthony Falls

Saint Anthony Falls is a waterfall on the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Its waterpower drove the city’s flour milling and industrial development, while erosion and collapse led to extensive engineering works.

Waterwheel: A machine that converts flowing or falling water into rotational power. Waterwheels show how the falls’ drop could be converted into mechanical energy.
Glacial River Warren: A large meltwater river that drained glacial Lake Agassiz at the end of the last ice age. Its ancient channel helped establish the Mississippi valley through which the falls later migrated.

Father Louis Hennepin: A French missionary and explorer who traveled through the upper Mississippi region in the 1670s. His published account gave the falls the name Saint Anthony.
Washburn-Crosby Company: A Minneapolis milling company that became a leading producer of flour and the predecessor of General Mills. Its large mills at the falls helped make Minneapolis a major flour-producing center.
St. Anthony Falls Tunnel collapse: The 1869 collapse of a tunnel beneath the Mississippi River near Saint Anthony Falls, which triggered a major flood. The collapse exposed how excavation and river erosion could destabilize the falls.
Hydropower: Electricity or mechanical power generated from moving water. The falls’ energy later supported hydroelectric generation as well as milling.
Dakota people: An Indigenous people whose homelands include parts of the upper Mississippi region. The falls and nearby river landscape hold longstanding significance in Dakota history and place-making.
