Saint John River

The Saint John River is a major river in eastern Canada, flowing through Quebec and New Brunswick, partly along the Maine–New Brunswick border, before reaching the Bay of Fundy.

Saint John River watershed: The land area drained by the Saint John River and its tributaries. Its vast drainage basin gathers water from Quebec, New Brunswick, and Maine.
Wolastoq: The Indigenous name for the Saint John River, commonly translated as “beautiful” or “good” river. Wolastoqiyik communities have long lived along and relied on this river.
Samuel de Champlain: A French explorer and colonial administrator who mapped parts of northeastern North America in the early seventeenth century. His 1604 expedition explored the river's mouth and nearby coast.
Mactaquac Generating Station: A hydroelectric generating station on the Saint John River near Fredericton, New Brunswick. It produces electricity by impounding and releasing the river's flow.
Saint John River Falls: A tidal rapid and waterfall system in Saint John, New Brunswick, where the river enters the Bay of Fundy. Extreme Fundy tides reverse the flow through this narrow outlet.
Wolastoqiyik: The Indigenous people whose traditional territory lies along the Wolastoq and its tributaries. Their history and continuing rights are inseparable from the river's geography.
Charles de Menou d'Aulnay: A French colonial leader in Acadia during the mid-seventeenth century. He established a settlement near the river's mouth at present-day Saint John.
Saint John River steamboats: Passenger and freight vessels that operated on the Saint John River during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They connected inland settlements before railways and highways displaced river travel.
Kennebecasis River: A major tributary of the Saint John River in southern New Brunswick. It joins the main river near Saint John and helps form the lower estuary.
Treaty of Paris (1783): The treaty that ended the American Revolutionary War and established a boundary between the United States and British North America. Its boundary provisions placed part of the river along the Maine–New Brunswick border.
