Saint Pierre and Miquelon

Saint Pierre and Miquelon is a French overseas collectivity and archipelago in the North Atlantic, off Newfoundland, Canada. It is France’s only territory in North America.

Treaty of Utrecht: A 1713 treaty that ended the War of the Spanish Succession and transferred territories among European powers. It ceded Saint Pierre and Miquelon to Britain, beginning a long contest over the islands.
French overseas collectivity: A French territorial status granting local institutions and autonomy under the sovereignty of the French Republic. This status defines the islands’ relationship with France and distinguishes them from a French department.

Canada–France Maritime Boundary Case: A 1992 arbitration that delimited the maritime boundary between Canada and Saint Pierre and Miquelon. The ruling gave the French territory a narrow corridor extending south from its islands.
Treaty of Paris (1814): A treaty that ended the War of the Sixth Coalition and restored France’s borders after Napoleon’s first abdication. Its settlement restored French possession of the islands after British occupation.
North Atlantic Ocean: The northern portion of the Atlantic Ocean, extending between Europe, Africa, and North America. Its waters place the archipelago between France’s European homeland and Canada.
