Sakya

Sakya is one of the major schools of Tibetan Buddhism, founded in the eleventh century and led historically by the Khön family. Its distinctive teachings include the Lamdré path, joining the instructions of the Hevajra Tantra with the view that fruition is present in the path.

Tibetan Buddhism: A form of Vajrayana Buddhism that developed in Tibet and neighboring Himalayan regions. Sakya is one of its major schools, alongside traditions such as Gelug and Kagyu.
Khön Könchok Gyalpo: The eleventh-century Tibetan religious leader who founded Sakya Monastery. His monastery gave the Sakya tradition its name and institutional center.

Sakya Monastery: A Tibetan Buddhist monastery founded in 1073 in Tsang, Tibet. Its founding marks the emergence of Sakya as an organized school.
Vajrayana empowerment: A ritual initiation that authorizes a practitioner to undertake a specific tantric practice. Sakya tantric practice, including Hevajra practice, depends on appropriate empowerment.
Kagyu: A Tibetan Buddhist school emphasizing meditation lineages transmitted through successive teachers. Its lineage history provides a contrast with Sakya’s family-centered institutions and Lamdré system.
Lamdré: A Sakya system of tantric instructions whose name means “path and its fruit.” This teaching system is Sakya’s most distinctive path framework.
Drogmi Lotsawa: An eleventh-century Tibetan translator who studied Buddhist teachings in India and Nepal. His transmission of tantric teachings informed the early Sakya lineage.
