Salmon

Salmon are salmonid fishes, many of which migrate between rivers and the sea. Their life cycles often connect freshwater spawning grounds with marine feeding habitats.

Anadromy: A life-history pattern in which fish grow mainly in the sea and migrate into freshwater to reproduce. Many salmon follow this sea-to-river pattern to reach their spawning grounds.
Salmonidae: The family of ray-finned fishes that includes salmon, trout, char, and whitefish. Salmon belong to this family, whose members share ancestry and anatomical traits.
Salmon aquaculture: The farming of salmon in freshwater or marine facilities for food production. Farmed salmon supplies markets independently of wild runs.
Keystone species: A species whose ecological effects are large relative to its abundance. Salmon carcasses and prey relationships can shape entire river and coastal food webs.
Salmon run: A seasonal migration of salmon from the sea or lakes to freshwater spawning areas. Runs concentrate returning adults into rivers during reproduction.
Atlantic salmon: A salmon species native to the North Atlantic and its adjoining rivers. It is the sole living species commonly called Atlantic salmon.
Salmon fishery: The commercial, recreational, or subsistence harvest of salmon. Fisheries depend on the timing and abundance of returning salmon.
Salmon migration and nutrient cycling: The movement of marine-derived nutrients into freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems by migrating salmon. Spawning salmon transport ocean nutrients upstream, where their remains feed other organisms.
Smoltification: The physiological and behavioral transformation that prepares juvenile salmonids for life in seawater. This change enables young salmon to leave rivers and enter the ocean.
Pacific salmon: Several salmon species in the genus Oncorhynchus, native mainly to the North Pacific. This group includes the best-known salmon species of the Pacific basin.
