Salt dome

A salt dome is a diapiric structure formed when buried salt rises through overlying rocks. It can deform surrounding strata and trap oil, gas, or other resources.

Salt tectonics: The deformation and movement of rock salt within Earth’s crust under geological forces. Salt domes are a prominent structure produced by salt moving through sedimentary basins.
Evaporite: A sedimentary rock formed when dissolved minerals precipitate as water evaporates. Salt domes commonly begin in thick evaporite deposits.
Petroleum trap: A geological arrangement that prevents migrating oil or gas from escaping and allows it to accumulate. Deformed and sealed layers around salt domes can trap migrating hydrocarbons.
Gulf of Mexico salt basin: A major salt-bearing sedimentary basin beneath the Gulf of Mexico and adjacent coastal regions. Its extensive salt tectonics produced many domes and shaped offshore petroleum systems.
Seismic reflection: A geophysical method that images underground structures using reflected sound waves. Seismic data reveal dome shape, though steep flanks and complex salt can distort images.
Diapir: A mass of relatively mobile material that rises through denser, overlying rock. A salt dome is a diapir made chiefly of rock salt.
Sedimentary basin: A region of long-term subsidence where sediment accumulates and may be deeply buried. Basin burial supplies the pressure and overburden beneath which salt mobilizes.
Caprock: A relatively impermeable rock layer that overlies and seals a geological formation. Dissolution and alteration above some domes create caprock that can seal accumulations.
Spindletop: A Texas oil field where a major 1901 gusher helped launch the state’s petroleum industry. Its discovery well tapped a reservoir associated with the Spindletop salt dome.
Salt diapirism: The upward movement of salt through overlying rock in response to gravity and tectonic forces. Its timing and driving forces remain central to reconstructing individual dome histories.
