Salt tolerance

Salt tolerance is an organism’s ability to survive and grow in saline conditions. It depends on limiting salt injury and maintaining water and ion balance.

Osmotic adjustment: The accumulation of solutes that lowers cellular water potential and helps cells retain water. Compatible solutes help cells counter the water loss caused by salty surroundings.
Osmosis: The net movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane toward higher solute concentration. Salty environments draw water out of cells through osmotic movement.
Halophyte: A plant adapted to complete its life cycle in soils or waters with high salt concentrations. Halophytes are prominent natural examples of plant salt tolerance.
Salt avoidance: Strategies that prevent exposure to saline conditions or reduce the time an organism experiences them. Avoidance reduces salt exposure, whereas tolerance permits functioning despite it.
Sodium exclusion: The prevention or restriction of sodium entry into, or transport to, sensitive tissues. Limiting sodium accumulation reduces ion toxicity in leaves and growing tissues.
Water potential: A measure of the potential energy of water that predicts its direction of movement. Organisms must keep cellular water potential favorable for water uptake.
Salinity in agriculture: The accumulation of soluble salts in agricultural soils or irrigation water to levels that affect crops. Crop salt tolerance determines which plants can produce yields in saline fields.
Drought tolerance: The ability to survive and grow when water is scarce. Drought and salinity both reduce water availability, but salinity also causes ion toxicity.
SOS pathway: A plant signaling and transport network that helps maintain sodium and potassium balance under salt stress. This plant pathway detects salt-induced calcium signals and promotes sodium removal.
Ion homeostasis: The regulation of ion concentrations and distributions within an organism. Salt tolerance requires controlling sodium while retaining essential ions such as potassium.
