Salva Kiir

Salva Kiir Mayardit is a South Sudanese politician who has served as president since South Sudan became independent in 2011. He led the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement during the transition to independence.

John Garang: A Sudanese rebel leader who founded the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement and led it until his death in 2005. Kiir succeeded Garang as movement leader after Garang died.
President of South Sudan: The head-of-state and head-of-government office established by South Sudan’s constitution. Kiir’s authority and formal responsibilities derive from this office.
Sudan People's Liberation Movement: A political movement founded in 1983 that led the southern Sudanese struggle against Sudan’s government. Kiir rose to lead this movement after John Garang’s death.
South Sudanese Civil War: A conflict that began in South Sudan in December 2013 between forces aligned with Kiir and Machar. Fighting within Kiir’s government triggered the war and defined his presidency.

Rebecca Nyandeng De Mabior: A South Sudanese politician and widow of John Garang who has held senior government roles. She has been a prominent political figure within the SPLM and Kiir’s government.
Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan: A 2018 peace agreement that established power-sharing and transitional arrangements in South Sudan. It set the terms for a unity government in which Kiir remained president.
