Salyut 1

Salyut 1 was the Soviet Union’s first space station, launched in 1971. It hosted the Soyuz 11 crew, whose return ended in their deaths from cabin depressurization.

Soyuz 11: The 1971 Soviet mission that carried the first crew to occupy a space station; its three cosmonauts died during return. Its crew lived aboard Salyut 1 for 23 days, then died after their return capsule depressurized.
Almaz program: A Soviet program that developed military crewed orbital stations and associated spacecraft. Salyut 1 used a station hull derived from Almaz designs.
Vladislav Volkov: A Soviet cosmonaut who flew on Soyuz 7 and Soyuz 11 and died during Soyuz 11’s return. He served aboard Salyut 1 as its flight engineer.
Soyuz 11 disaster: The 1971 accident in which the Soyuz 11 crew died when their spacecraft cabin depressurized during return. The disaster ended Salyut 1’s first crewed program and exposed a fatal capsule vulnerability.
Soyuz 10: A 1971 Soviet mission that docked with Salyut 1 but could not transfer its crew into the station. Its failed transfer exposed a weakness in the station’s early docking arrangements.
DOS-1: The first Soviet long-duration orbital station, completed as Salyut 1 from a modified Almaz hull. DOS-1 was the development designation for the station launched as Salyut 1.
Georgy Dobrovolsky: A Soviet cosmonaut who commanded Soyuz 11 and died with his crewmates during reentry in 1971. He led the only crew to live aboard Salyut 1.
Salyut program: A series of Soviet and later Russian space stations launched from 1971 through the 1980s. Salyut 1 began the program that developed longer-lived stations and more reliable crew operations.
Androgynous peripheral attachment system: A Soviet spacecraft docking mechanism designed to connect vehicles without requiring one to be the active chaser. Its docking hardware enabled Soyuz vehicles to attach to Salyut 1.
Soviet space program: The state-directed effort that organized Soviet rocketry, satellites, and human spaceflight from the 1950s onward. Salyut 1 was the program’s first operational space station.
