Knowra Saṃbhogakāya Saṃbhogakāya Saṃbhogakāya is the Buddha’s enjoyment body: a subtle, glorified form through which awakened beings appear in pure realms and teach advanced bodhisattvas.
Trikāya : The Mahāyāna doctrine that describes Buddhahood through three bodies: dharmakāya, saṃbhogakāya, and nirmāṇakāya. Saṃbhogakāya is one of the three bodies in this framework.
Pure land : A purified realm associated with a Buddha, where conditions support spiritual practice and awakening. These realms are settings in which saṃbhogakāya Buddhas appear.
Mahāyāna : A major Buddhist tradition emphasizing the bodhisattva path and the aspiration to attain Buddhahood for all beings. The doctrine of saṃbhogakāya developed within Mahāyāna Buddhist thought.
Amitābha : A Buddha whose western pure land, Sukhāvatī, is central to several Mahāyāna traditions. Amitābha is a prominent Buddha associated with a pure realm and exalted manifestations.
Dharmakāya : The Buddha’s ultimate body, identified with awakened reality and the truth of the Dharma. It is the ultimate body paired with saṃbhogakāya in the three-body account.
Buddha-field : A domain shaped by a Buddha’s vows, merit, and teaching activity. A saṃbhogakāya’s realm expresses the qualities of its Buddha.
Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra : An influential Mahāyāna treatise attributed to Maitreya and transmitted through Asaṅga. It presents systematic accounts of the Buddha’s qualities and bodies.
Sukhāvatī : A pure land associated with Amitābha, described as a realm conducive to awakening. It is a major example of the purified setting associated with Buddha manifestations.
Nirmāṇakāya : The Buddha’s emanation body, appearing in forms accessible to ordinary beings. Unlike saṃbhogakāya’s subtle appearances to advanced bodhisattvas, it can appear in the human world.
Thirty-two marks of a great man : A traditional set of bodily signs associated with a great being, especially a Buddha or universal monarch. Texts associate the glorified appearance of a Buddha with extraordinary bodily marks.
