Samnites

The Samnites were an ancient Italic people who lived in the central and southern Apennines. Their communities formed a loose federation that fought Rome in the Samnite Wars.

Samnium: A mountainous region of ancient central Italy inhabited by the Samnites. This region formed the Samnites’ core homeland.
Samnite Confederation: A military and political alliance among Samnite communities in ancient Italy. The alliance coordinated resistance without forming a centralized state.
