Samoan independence

Samoan independence was the end of New Zealand’s administration of Western Samoa and the creation of an independent state on 1 January 1962.

German Samoa: A German colony in the western Samoan islands from 1900 until New Zealand occupation in 1914. German colonial rule preceded the New Zealand administration that ended in independence.
Constitution of Samoa: The supreme law establishing Samoa’s parliamentary system, institutions, and fundamental rights. The constitution provided the legal framework for the new independent state.
Olaf Frederick Nelson: A Samoan and European businessman and political leader who helped organize early Mau resistance to New Zealand rule. His organizing helped establish the movement that pressed for Samoan self-government.
United Nations membership of Samoa: Samoa’s participation as a sovereign member of the United Nations, which it joined in 1976. UN membership later extended the international recognition gained through independence.
American Samoa: A U.S. territory in the eastern Samoan Islands that remains under American sovereignty. Unlike Western Samoa, the eastern islands did not become an independent state in 1962.
New Zealand occupation of German Samoa: New Zealand forces occupied German Samoa in August 1914 during the First World War. The occupation began the period of New Zealand control before independence.
1 January 1962: The date Western Samoa became an independent state, ending New Zealand administration. This is the formal date on which independence took effect.
Tupua Tamasese Lealofi III: A Samoan paramount chief and Mau leader killed by New Zealand police during the 1929 Black Saturday shootings. His death became a defining sacrifice in the struggle against colonial administration.
