Samora Machel

Samora Machel was a Mozambican revolutionary and politician who led the independence struggle and served as the country’s first president from 1975 until his death in 1986.

Eduardo Mondlane: A Mozambican anthropologist and nationalist who founded FRELIMO and led it until his assassination in 1969. Mondlane led the movement Machel joined and preceded him as FRELIMO’s president.
Mozambican War of Independence: The armed conflict between FRELIMO and Portugal, fought from 1964 until Mozambique’s independence in 1975. Machel rose to FRELIMO’s leadership during this war and commanded its forces.
Marxism–Leninism: A communist political ideology emphasizing a vanguard party, revolutionary change, and public ownership of major production. FRELIMO adopted Marxism–Leninism as its official ideology during Machel’s presidency.
Mbuzini air disaster: The 1986 crash of a Soviet-built aircraft near Mbuzini, South Africa, that killed Machel and 33 others. The crash ended Machel’s presidency and remains disputed in accounts of its cause.
Joaquim Chissano: A Mozambican politician who served as president from 1986 to 2005 after Machel’s death. Chissano succeeded Machel and shifted Mozambique toward multiparty politics.
FRELIMO: The Mozambique Liberation Front, a nationalist movement that fought Portuguese rule and became the country’s ruling party. Machel led FRELIMO after Mondlane’s assassination and carried it into government.

Portuguese colonialism in Mozambique: Portugal’s rule over Mozambique, established in the sixteenth century and ended with independence in 1975. Colonial rule provided the political conditions that Machel’s movement fought to end.
