Samuel Beckett

Samuel Beckett (1906–1989) was an Irish novelist, playwright, and poet whose spare, bleak works include Waiting for Godot and the trilogy Molloy, Malone Dies, and The Unnamable.

Waiting for Godot: A play in which Vladimir and Estragon wait beside a road for someone named Godot who never arrives. Its suspended action and comic desolation became the clearest stage expression of Beckett’s style.
Minimalism: An artistic approach that uses severe reduction and few elements to concentrate attention on what remains. Beckett strips settings and dialogue down until small actions acquire unusual weight.
Dublin: The capital of Ireland, situated on the country’s east coast and a major center of Irish cultural life. Beckett was born in Foxrock, near Dublin, and his education and early writing were shaped there.
Suzanne Deschevaux-Dumesnil: A French pianist and Beckett’s longtime partner and wife, who supported his work throughout his career. Her partnership shaped Beckett’s life in France and continued through his literary success.

Trinity College Dublin: An Irish university founded in 1592 and located in central Dublin. Beckett studied French and Italian there before beginning his literary career.
Barbara Bray: A British literary editor and BBC radio producer who worked closely with Beckett and translated his writing. Their correspondence and collaboration illuminate the making and broadcast life of his later works.
Krapp’s Last Tape: A 1958 Beckett play in which an aging man listens to recordings of his younger self. Its tape recorder makes memory and self-division concrete through voice and replay.
