Samuel Colt

Samuel Colt (1814–1862) was an American inventor and industrialist who founded Colt’s Patent Fire-Arms Manufacturing Company and helped popularize the revolver through manufacturing and marketing.

Elisha K. Root: An American machinist and inventor who became superintendent of Colt’s factory and advanced its manufacturing methods. Root helped turn Colt’s designs into a large-scale precision manufacturing operation.
Colt Paterson revolver: The first commercially produced revolver made by Colt’s Patent Arms Manufacturing Company, beginning in 1836. This early model embodied Colt’s rotating-cylinder design but exposed practical weaknesses.
Colt’s Patent: The United States patent granted to Samuel Colt in 1836 for a mechanism that coordinated a revolving firearm cylinder with its hammer. The patent gave Colt legal grounds to manufacture and license his revolver design.
Colt Model 1851 Navy: A six-shot, .36-caliber percussion revolver manufactured by Colt from 1851 into the 1870s. Its broad sales made it one of Colt’s most influential nineteenth-century handguns.
Pepper-box firearm: A multi-barreled handgun whose barrels rotate to align with the firing mechanism. Unlike Colt’s revolvers, pepper-boxes rotate the barrels rather than a chambered cylinder.
Horace Smith: An American firearms inventor and manufacturer who co-founded Smith & Wesson. Smith’s company became a major rival in the market Colt helped establish.
Colt Walker: A large .44-caliber percussion revolver developed by Colt and Texas Ranger Samuel Hamilton Walker in 1847. The Walker’s military contract helped revive Colt’s business and refine the revolver.
Colt’s Patent Fire-Arms Manufacturing Company: A firearms company founded by Samuel Colt in 1855 in Hartford, Connecticut, and later known as Colt’s Manufacturing Company. Colt’s company carried his designs into sustained industrial production.
Colt Single Action Army: A single-action revolver introduced by Colt in 1873 and adopted by the United States Army. Introduced after Colt’s death, it extended the company’s revolver legacy.
Deringer pistol: A small, usually single-shot pistol associated with concealed carry in the nineteenth century. It offered concealability rather than the multiple shots central to Colt’s designs.
