Samuel de Champlain

Samuel de Champlain was a French explorer, cartographer, and colonial administrator who founded Quebec City in 1608 and helped establish France’s colony in New France.

Saintonge: A historic province in western France, centered on the area around Saintes. Champlain was born in Brouage, a port town in this province.
Cartography: The practice and study of making maps. Champlain’s maps turned observations from voyages into knowledge useful to navigation and settlement.
Foundation of Quebec (1608): The establishment of a French settlement at Quebec by Samuel de Champlain in 1608. This founding turned his exploration into a permanent settlement on the St. Lawrence.
