San Remo Conference

The San Remo Conference was an Allied meeting in April 1920 that allocated League of Nations mandates over former Ottoman territories in the Middle East.

French Mandate for Syria and Lebanon: The League of Nations mandate under which France governed Syria and Lebanon from 1923 to 1946. San Remo assigned France the mandate for Syria and Lebanon.
League of Nations mandate: A territory administered by a state under League of Nations authority and international supervision. The conference allocated mandates as the governing framework for former Ottoman territories.
Paris Peace Conference: The 1919–1920 negotiations in which the Allied powers arranged peace settlements after World War I. San Remo continued the Allied negotiations over former Ottoman territories begun in Paris.
David Lloyd George: The British prime minister from 1916 to 1922 and a leading figure in the postwar peace negotiations. He represented Britain at San Remo and backed its mandate claims.
Arab nationalism: A political movement advocating unity, independence, or self-determination for Arab peoples. Its demand for Arab self-rule conflicted with the mandate allocations made by Allied powers.

Sykes–Picot Agreement: A secret 1916 agreement in which Britain and France planned spheres of influence across Ottoman Arab lands. Its proposed British and French zones foreshadowed the division debated at San Remo.
Georges Clemenceau: The French prime minister who led France during World War I and the 1919 peace negotiations. He represented French interests in the negotiations that preceded San Remo.
Zionism: A Jewish national movement supporting the establishment and development of a homeland in Palestine. San Remo's Palestine decision gave international backing to Britain's commitment to a Jewish national home.
