Sanchi Stupa

Sanchi Stupa, or the Great Stupa, is an ancient Buddhist monument in Madhya Pradesh, India. Begun under Emperor Ashoka, it was enlarged and adorned in later centuries.

Stupa: A Buddhist monument, usually a solid mound, built to enshrine relics or commemorate sacred events. Sanchi’s defining structure belongs to this architectural form.
Ashoka: A Mauryan emperor who ruled much of the Indian subcontinent in the third century BCE and promoted Buddhism. Tradition and inscriptions associate the earliest Sanchi monument with his reign.
Sanchi Stupa gateways: Four carved stone entrances added around the Great Stupa, decorated with Buddhist narratives and auspicious motifs. Their reliefs are the site’s most recognizable sculptural features.

Harmika: A small square railing placed atop a stupa’s dome, often enclosing the base of its central mast. Sanchi’s harmika marks the dome’s sacred summit.
Buddhism under Ashoka: The expansion and support of Buddhist institutions during the reign of the Mauryan emperor Ashoka. Ashoka’s patronage helps explain the monument’s early foundation.
