Sancho VI of Navarre

Sancho VI, called Sancho the Wise, ruled Navarre from 1150 to 1194. He asserted the kingdom’s independence from Castile and Aragon and strengthened royal authority.

Treaty of Carrión: A 1140 agreement between Alfonso VII of León and Castile and Ramón Berenguer IV of Barcelona concerning their territories and interests. Its settlement shaped the political landscape Sancho inherited and the neighboring powers he had to manage.
García Ramírez of Navarre: King of Navarre from 1134 to 1150, who restored a separate Navarrese monarchy after a period of union with Aragon. Sancho inherited a kingdom whose separate monarchy his father had recently reestablished.
